“Singing with the Oratorio Society is a real treat! We perform glorious music together in a glorious setting and have a lot of fun while we’re at it!”
We welcome applications from singers, particularly Tenors & Basses, to join the Society - whether you are experienced or a relative beginner, and would like to enjoy the experience of singing some of the great choral works in the iconic surroundings of Wells Cathedral.

If you would like to attend a Monday evening rehearsal as a “taster” please arrive well before 7.30pm, report to the choir’s welcome desk in the Nave on arrival - and join in the rehearsal.
Intending members are given a short, simple, voice test by our Conductor usually within a week or two of applying to join. Singers are asked to prepare a hymn or song of their choice to enable our Conductor to check voice and determine which part (Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass, First or Second) you would be suited to join.
The annual subscription for membership is £130 (2023-24). Our current season started on September 11th 2023 - so for those joining in January 2024 a half-season subscription of £65 is payable.
Members are expected to attend all rehearsals. Where absence is unavoidable over a number of rehearsals leading up to a concert, the Conductor will determine whether a singer can take part in a concert.
