Sachin Gunga is the current Senior Organ Scholar at Wells Cathedral, having taken up the post in September 2011.
Born in Derby, Saching trained as a chorister in the Derby Cathedral Choir and studied the organ under the Assistant Organist, Dr Tom Corfield. He gave his first recital in the Cathedral in 2004. Sachin went on to read Classics at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. During his time there he was heavily involved in the musical activities of the college; singing with the Chapel Choir, playing in (and occasionally conducting) the college orchestra, and even acting as Musical Director for a couple of dramatic productions. After graduating in 2007, he spent a year as acting organ scholar of Trinity Hall chapel, receiving lessions from Andrew Arthur the Director of Music.
Changing his academic from Classics to Music, Sachin went on to study a Masters degree at the Birmingham Conservatoire, under Harry Fairs and David Saint. As well as often playing at St Chad's Cathedral, he participated in numerous excursions with the Organ Department, to locations such as Coventry, Oxford, St Alban's, Toulouse, Amsterdam and Copenhagen. He also sang with the Conservatoire Chamber Choir and the choir of St Philip's Cathedral.
Before coming to Wells, Sachin spent one year as organ scholar of Truro Cathedral, accompanying the Cathedral Choir and St Mary's Sngers, performing as a soloist and with the Choral Scholars. He completed his Royal College of Organists ARCO diploma in January 2011.
